We are excited to share a major update regarding a disability discrimination case we've been vigorously pursuing under the Minnesota Human Rights Act. This spring, we achieved a remarkable $375,000 jury verdict for our client, Dan Engebretson, in Dakota County District Court. Just yesterday, the court upheld this victory by denying the defendant's motions for a new trial and judgment notwithstanding the verdict.
A Comprehensive Award
The court's ruling not only confirmed the jury's decision but also granted additional financial relief to our client. In addition to the original $375,000 verdict, the court awarded us a substantial sum of $1,093,033 in attorneys' fees, $138,801 in prejudgment interest, $46,648 in costs, and a $5,000 civil penalty payable to the state. This brings the total award to over $1.65 million, with interest continuing to accrue, underscoring the significance of this case and the strong stance taken against disability discrimination.
Team Effort
This outstanding result is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our legal team, including Lucas Kaster, Riley Palmer, Laura Farley, and Eric Doyle of Nichols Kaster, PLLP. Their tireless efforts and commitment to justice have made a profound difference in Dan's life and have set an important precedent in the fight against discrimination.
Moving Forward
This case highlights the importance of standing up for the rights of individuals with disabilities and ensuring that they receive fair treatment in all aspects of life. We are proud to have been part of this journey and to advocate for Dan and others who face similar challenges.
As we continue to pursue justice for our clients, we remain committed to fighting against discrimination in all its forms, championing the rights of those who are often marginalized.
Thank you for your support as we work to make a difference in our community. We look forward to sharing more updates on our ongoing efforts and successes in the future.
