The gender gap in wages is not behind us, and today is a reminder of that. Today is Equal Pay Day, an event originally created in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity that has since been adopted nationally by President Obama. Why April 9th? This date is significant because it marks how far into 2013 a woman has to work in order to make the same wages her male counterpart made in the year 2012. In other words, a man makes in 12 months what a woman makes in more than 15 months! Please join Nichols Kaster in recognizing Equal Pay Day, and looking forward to the day it becomes a celebration rather than a sobering reminder of the wage disparities between men and women.
